Discourses

It came to my attention that MTV was going to do a feature on furries in their show "Sex2k." When looking up dates and such to see when it would be on, I noticed it was also called "Sex Club," and I really don't know what the difference is. This is the first time I have paid attention to MTV for quite some time, so I do not know how their shows work. This show was going to run this feature, though, so I was intrigued. When I heard they were going to do it, I was nervous at first; usually one should not think of MTV as the best place to go to learn truth and details about any subculture. Nevertheless, I wanted to see this show out of curiosity. I also thought that if it was as bad as I feared, seeing it would help me know exactly what was wrong with it, thus giving me a more informed opinion about it.

So, I found myself sitting down and watching it. To my surprise, it really was not that bad. In fact, I liked it. Most people were afraid they would delve too far into the sexual aspect of furriness. They did explore that a little; this is Sex2k that did this, you have to expect them to show something like that. But I do not think they went too far with that aspect, and I do think they did a good job with the show overall.

At the very least, it didn't do the things that the furry community was afraid it would. (Note that I dislike the entire idea of a "furry community"; I consider myself an idividual, not a member of some collective that can be judged by what the other members do. I am basically playing along with the idea of a furry comunity in this case, to explain what they were afraid of.) Most furries constantly seem to be afraid of being linked to pedophilia and zoophilia. (This is about as stupid a thing to worry about as whether wearing a pink sweater makes you gay, but oh well.) The other thing they were afraid of in this particular case--especially since Sex2k was doing this show--was that it would depict the whole community as nothing more than sex-crazed perverts and little else.

To address these fears, they did nothing to link furriness with anything else. All the artwork and such they showed depicted of-age subjects, and they even made the furry art look closer to the human side than the animal side. The person they interviewed even said something about how it is basically the same thing, only instead of looking at a beautiful woman with big breats, you're looking at a vixen morph with big breasts. As far as its sexual content...well, like I said at the beginning, you can't expect Sex2k to do this without showing something yiffy. But there was more talk about the inner aspects of furriness than there was about mindless yiffing, which I thought was nice. This person gave an elaborate explanation of how it is not just a hobby or a fetish, it is kind of an inner identity thing, et cetera. There was also a lot of content regarding his mom's trying to come to terms with his furriness.

I do think it was tastefully handled--especially considering its being an episode of Sex2k--and it was very well done overall. Actually, my only complaint is that it ended so abruptly; the end sort of felt like they were just filming along, and then suddenly realized they were out of time, and quickly did a 2-second wrap-up and cut. This feeling of being taken along for the ride while watching the show, and then suddenly being dumped off at the end, left me wanting more. However, I did manage to tape it, so I can watch the whole thing again as I please.
